Why I am doing the Walk for Vocations – one of our seminarians

To be a seminarian is to say to Jesus ‘You are first in my life’ and to try and live out that decision every day. It’s not an easy decision but it is a very good one. Any time a person makes this kind of decision for God in their life, we are challenged. We ask ourselves ‘am I living that out in my life as well?’ So as a seminarian, my witness can promote vocations and this is one reason I am walking. I want to promote vocations and also encourage those who are thinking of a vocation by showing what a joy it is.

Within those joys though, there are many difficulties, especially in seminary, and we seminarians can become discouraged and lose heart. Often Parish life helps to re-energize us. The seminarians complete placements in parishes during their summer and when we return to college in September, the community is always in good spirits from the encouragement they received from parishioners. The walk for vocations will be a great opportunity for me to walk with you and allow me to receive that encouragement that you always give by your enthusiasm that helps me to continue to make that decision for Jesus.

In this way, the walk echoes the life of Nicholas Postgate who walked in this area over 300 years ago. I imagine that, during his ministry, though he faced the threat of execution, he was always encouraged by those fellow Catholics he served. He continues to be a great model for priests and seminarians and through the walk, his witness and life become real for us.
