Why I am doing the Walk for Vocations – one of our seminarians

To be a seminarian is to say to Jesus ‘You are first in my life’ and to try and live out that decision every day. It’s not an easy decision but it is a very good one. Any time a person makes this kind of decision for God in their life, we are challenged. We ask ourselves ‘am I living that out in my life as well?’ So as a seminarian, my witness can promote vocations and this is one reason I am walking. I want to promote vocations and also encourage those who are thinking of a vocation by showing what a joy it is. Read More »

Some vocation facts for your consideration

We have three students discerning their vocation in seminary at the moment; one in 1st year, one in 3rd year and one in 4th year – the normal course is of 6 years duration.

The cost of training a student to the priesthood is £120,000
Last year our collection raised £40,000
We had a legacy of £28,000

One parish is sponsoring one of our seminarians through his studies – could any other parish or parishes do the same?

Today, a new collection box for the Priests’ Training Fund is being launched. Boxes are available in your parish; may I encourage each family to have a box in their home and support all the efforts being made to raise funds for the training of present and future priests for our Diocese,

Three of our priests have died in the past 18 months – Frs Jimmy Purcell, Austin O’Neill and Joe O’Brien – in total 146 years of priestly service.

Walk the Walk for Vocations

Sunday July 18, 2010

In 2006 we had our first Vocations Walk – which was enjoyed by many and worth repeating in 2010. Whilst a week-long walk isn’t going to be possible, a date has been chosen for our second Walk – one day – on 18 July.

Bishop Terence will be leading the walk along with our young men presently training for diocesan priesthood. Bishop Terence and the Diocesan Vocations Team extends a warm invitation to each and everyone in our parishes and beyond, to join them on this leisurely walk – a public witness for Vocations – hopefully a beautiful day out in North Yorkshire on a balmy July day – well that’s what we are hoping for!
